I have to admit, when I first heard about BenBits I got pretty excited. A chewing gum that doesn’t contain any chemicals?! One that only has natural ingredients?! One that I can – guilt-free – add to my healthy lifestyle??
Recently I’ve been reading a lot about chewing gum. I used to be a big gum fan-girl, chewing away all day long. That is, until I found out about the ingredients… and, apparently, most aren’t even included on the packaging! So, first-up, BenBits only has 6 ingredients compared to over 20 in regular gum – that’s a good start!
You may have thought that chewing gum is harmless because you don’t actually swallow it. The reality, however, is that your body absorbs most of the ingredients directly through your mouth without being able to filter out any of the toxins. Furthermore, when sugar-free, it usually contains Aspartame, which is an artificial sweetener that’s been linked to cancer!
Furthermore, chewing gum is made from polymers, which are synthetic plastics that don’t biodegrade. When it’s tossed on the pavement, it will stay there for decades or, more likely, until it’s removed which is very costly and time-consuming. I don’t know about you, but I’d far rather my council tax went towards something more valuable for the community than cleaning up gum!
So – BenBits… why am I so excited? Well, it contains 100% natural ingredients and, after it’s been chewed, it’s biodegradable and will break down way quicker – whether in a bin or, accidently of course, stuck on a strangers shoe or on the pavement. Since the chewing gum is natural, it feels slightly different when you first chew it, but stick with it – the taste is even better! My favourite is the ‘Minty Salmiak’. It’s like eating candy, but without the guilt (and the dental bills!)!
So now I can chew gum again without feeling guilty about adding any harmful chemicals to my body and it tastes good too! I can’t wait to buy more when I get back in The Netherlands, they sell it at the big supermarket Albert Heijn and in Marqt.
